For the other user (Barb North Platte, Nebraska), I feel your pain. I had the same problem. I switched to Western Wireless (AKA CELLUAR ONE) after having service with Cingular for more than 5 years. I can't say Cingular was perfect, but they are shining stars compared to the nightmare service I had with Western Wireless / Cellular One.

Since day 1 I was never able to make a decent call. I got dropped constantly (way more than I ever got dropped with Cingular). Supposedly my phone was bad. The local Wester Wireless office sent off my phone. It was gone for a month. When it came back (supposedly repaired), nothing was different. I had the same, terrible phone with lousy connections, dropped calls.

I cancelled after a few months because I really needed a dependable phone and service. I knew about the cancellation charge (which should be illegal in my opinion). Naturally I had a 200.00 charge on my bill. I called to dispute the charge. Just like Barb in North Platte, Nebraska, I feel I was being charged for service that did not meet minimum requirements.

Why should I pay for service that doesn't even work half the time? I didn't mind paying the actual monthly service fee. However, the cancellation charge was not acceptable. When explaining all the trouble I had (and even the fact that I dealt with the local Wester Wireless office numerous times), the Cellular One rep simply said, "sorry. There's nothing we can do about it. You owe a cancellation charge." Give me a break! First of all, these companies shouldn't even charge a fee like that! Second of all, they should have some reasoning ability to understand that not all customers should be charged this fee. If a customer has had poor service, then it should be illegal for the company for force a cancel fee. I didn't want to cancel, I was forced by horrible service.

What happened to the day of reasonable, understanding customer service reps? Customer service is not a priority at Cellular One. I guess it doesn't bother them that people like Barb (and myself) post terrible things about their company. I'm sick of big companies bullying consumers because of a stupid contract. Yes, I did sign a contract (which stated I would owe a 200.00 cancel fee). I'm not dispuing that. However, I did expect a basic level of service. I did not receive that service.

I encourage ALL who have had problems with Cellular One or Western Wireless to post to this site and contact the Better Business Bureau. Cellular One has been sued in the past over deceptive practices and cancellation fees. It's no wonder! Looks like the customer is still not the focus of their business. When will they learn?
