Never shipped item in time stated, and won't cancel order

On 10/12/09 I ordered a U2 t-shirt for my wife, as part of our anniversary. I went through U2.com, who evidently uses Fanfire.com to handle merchandise. After processing the order I recieved an email/invoice stating that the item would be shipped in 24-48 hrs. If in stock (which it was, as there was no statement saying otherwise) with delivery within an additional 5-10 business days. Everything fine so far. On the third day, there was still no shipping/tracking information available on their website, so I used the tracking number on USPS.com with the same results. After waiting a few more days, I emailed fanfire on 10/20/09 asking the status of the order. I reveived a reply the same day, stating it was backordered, and would be shipped as soon as it was recieved. The credit charge, in the meantime had stayed in a hold status in my account, and I thought had posted. Suddenly it dissapeared, and went back to hold status on 10/27/09, causing my account to overdraw. I called their customer service to cancel the order, and was told that was not possible, as it was magically boxed and ready to ship all of a sudden, and the best I could do was wait until it was delivered, and return it for a refund; paying S/H out of my own pocket of course. I've seen similar complaints elsewhere on the web, and am trying to figure out the scam these guys are running.
