Shiloh Springs Store and Lock
Barbara E Jaros (Englewood Ohio) Mgr Stolen Valo

Shops, Products, Services

I put my household items in Shiloh Springs Store and Lock, 1700 Shiloh Springs road, Dayton Ohio 45426 (937) 567-5625.

My daughter is active duty USS Ronald Reagan and my son is a Corpsman currently on active reserve and I am a Marine. While in Dayton, they presented no problem to us as we did business with them. When we departed the area for employment, we noticed they would not give us receipts when we paid, send us bills or statements. Their manager informed us they were not required by law to send us these items but we could come to Dayton to get them as they kept them on file. We rarely knew what we owed and that info was accessible only when we called, putting us at the mercy of what ever they claimed the bill to be.

On Oct 13 my wife received a phone call (in North Carolina) they had sold our unit. They stated we had a $220 balance and that we would be getting something in the mail. We never received anything. We had no chance to pay. They sent a certified letter to our former Dayton Ohio address even though they knew we no longer lived there. The Manager (Barbara Jaros) had been sending all other correspondence to our North Carolina address. We did not respond to the certified letter because we never saw it and their Lawyer, Laurence Lasky, said that made their sale legal.
They never had a problem receiving our payments via express mail from North Carolina though.

Primarily, my unit had uniforms (dress blue and green), utilities, tax papers, professional papers, certificates, the flag flown over the capital in my honor, our childrens personal items and some military items, and the family items (furniture, photo albums, clothing, dd214 in a personal safe, etc).

Base legal at Camp Lejeune said there should have been some legal procedure for the state that was followed and advised me to file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney Generals office for consumer fraud. Mini storages have been a particular problem during this time of war for military families who couldn't take their possessions with them. One of the primary legal issues facing the self-storage industry has been the operator's failure to follow the state's lien sale procedure law in many states. They beleive this procedure law may have been violated.

Basically this legalized theivery has netted not only our personal property but, the military uniforms, utilities, documents (they have a copy of my service record book) and dd214, and professional papers which they have apparently sold or given to family and friends.

I have had my accounts pilferred (they got my box of checks in the safe), and identity stolen. I believe it is directly related to these people. This info has no value to them except to steal the valor and memories of those who have served! Their Lawyer, Laurence A. Lasky of Lasky and Scharrer
even had some insulting words for those of us "who think so much of our service". He obviously thinks very little of Vets and it showed in his letter to the Attorney General.

This may not be covered by the solen valor law, but it should. When you rent an apartment or house and fail to pay rent in most states, even the landlord can't just lock you out and claim the furnishings and contents. They must follow legal procedure before they can claim your possessions and auction them off. Veteran's and their families should be made aware of these bad operators in the mini storage scam!
