First of all, I have a 4 year degree, a good job, and a wonderful child. I am not stupid, or have a lack of common sense, but I am single. I am okay with being single and if I end up spending the rest of my life single then so be it. I want you to understand where I am coming from when I explain what happened to me. At the end of November I was feeling down. The holidays were approaching and I was still dealing with the emotions from my divorce 2 years earlier, as my ex-husband was re-married to his affair and they were expecting a baby in a couple of months. After some bad experience with Match.com and other dating web sites, I continued to be concerned for my safety and responded to an online ad for Great Expectations in Kansas City. I was called the very next evening by a representative for the company and after we chatted for a few minutes and I explained what had happened to me in the past and what I was looking for. She wanted me to come to the Overland Park office for a free consulation the very next day which didn't work with my schedule. The woman made a comment regarding how important it is for me to find a quality husband but to also make the commitment to find a quality full time father for my son. That struck a chord with me so I came in 2 days later around 6pm. This is where I should have turned around and left folks, but I didn't. I talked for about 2 hours with a woman named Andrea Hartman who was the director. I mentioned that I was looking for a Christian man who was settled in their career and had direction in life. She came back with the fact that the majority of the members were professional and Christian and that this was a Christian based organization. She also mentioned that there were hundreds of members in my desired age range 30-40 and she even had a few in mind that she thought would be great for me. I thought how fantastic it was to finally have a great tool to dating and with background checks. This will be so easy! Little did I know, that I had made the biggest mistake of my life. I signed a contract and initialed several spaces on the back as well. She briefly went over what I was initialing but I didn't much of a chance to really read any of it. I paid $200 down which covered my "photo shoot" which was scheduled the following week. And I qualified for the 3 year payment plan through their own billing company. The photos and video were taken by one of their employees and a digital camera. My payments run $130 per month for 3 years which gurantees marriage in my lifetime. After I was finally given a logon and password, after my photo shoot, I was able to view what I had bought in to. Yes there were probably a few hundred members in the KC area, but in the 30 to 40 year old age range there averages 70.20 of the 70 are actually active members, the rest are inactive, and probably only 5% are actually listed as Christian. I called about 2 weeks after I signed up for all of this, because I felt that it just wasn't worth $130 per month that I really couldn't afford. I was never called back. I emailed the office and began corresponding with an Ashley Vaughn who appreciated that I was letting them know and indicated that my contract could be cancelled. I had to email her about 3 times, and each time she said she was still looking into it with corporate. The last time I emailed her, I waited for another couple of weeks then just gave up and called the office. Ashley no longer worked there, I was told.in the meantime, I defaulted on my first payment because I thought my contract was getting cancelled so I was turned over to collections. I was told that I could have never cancelled my contract to begin with. After talking to a Derek Jones with Alternative Recovery Management out of California, he rudely told me that it didn't matter what GE was working on, I owed the debt. I told him that I really couldn't afford the payment and he said that judging by my credit I could afford lots of things so this shouldn't be a problem. If I settled, I would have to pay $1700 immediately so I negotiated with GE, their billing company and the lovely Derek Jones to just continue my contract since I was only late with the first payment in order to keep my credit from being ruined. I have had a few dates over the past 9 months, the last one was just too creepy and after he mentioned that he had been with GE for 3 years and was arrested last fall for tresspassing, I really began to wonder if the criminal checks were really completed monthly for each member. This was too much for me, and I haven't dated anyone from there sense. I have men interested but they are usually in their 50s or 60s (I'm 32). I am going to file a complaint with the KS Attorney General and hopefully get something resolved, I don't care about getting a refund, I just want my contract cancelled. I don't know what will happen but I am not going to pay them another dime. When I tried to contact the local office they said they could not help me since I had been in collections for the past 9 months. I have been making timely payments to this unethical company and I now wonder where my money is really going? It turns out that GE is now Club 1 of Kansas City. They play on your emotions, and leave you broke. Avoid at all costs!
