Rate Change and Non-Refund of Deposit

I contracted with movers from www.elitransport.com (have another url at www.elitransport.net) to move from FL to TX in the summer of 2009. I DID have a POSITIVE EXPERIENCE with the person who provided the estimate. Looking it over and measuring the items myself (we measured in cubic ft) the numbers were right on, if not a little conservative too keep us from paying extra. On moving day the truck (not one of theirs, but a 3rd party contractor instead) had continual setbacks and we had to push it back a day. No problem, we planned for something like this. It's in the contract.

They showed up on time the next morning and headed up the stairs. According to them every 9 stairs is a flight which adds a charge. Again, no problem, we were planning for something like this. It's in the contract. The driver immediately told us that we had nearly double what we were quoted for. This was NOT in the quote. Here's the best part, we had decided not to bring a few things so that we could lower the proce. So, we had less than what we were quoted for.

Needless to say, we fired them and were told we could not get our deposit back because we cancelled the job within the move time period. To me, if you change the "binding" contract then it is void and I can cancel. Not according to them.

In conclusion, use them if you like but be prepared and expect to pay double what you are quoted. And I say double, but in fact they could quadrouple your rate and if you have the "cajones" to fire them, as we did, you are still out the deposit.
