Consolidated Media Services
Outrightly refused to answer direct questions and gave me the runnaround

Shops, Products, Services

I received not only one, but at least 5 calls from CMS today. At first I was interested in the offer of 6 magazines for only $3.45 a week. It seemed too good to be true.

As I talked to "Marsha" I specifically asked if I could cancel my order at any time. She hemmed and hawed and eventually said they asked us to agree to not cancel the order. I also informed her up front I was not interested in giving any infor over the phone. If CMS was going to send me the magazines, diamond watch, and some other item I do not recall, and let me see all their info in writing, then I would appreciate it and read the info.

Marsha said another person would call to verify all my billing questions. I said that was not necessary if they would just send me their infor in writing. She informed me they had a policy in verifing all the info with a second call.

Three calls later, her supervisor called and gave me the same info she had given me. So I got down to my 2 basic questions. 1: how did they get my info, name and address etc???
He said by my credit card company, but had to ask me which one I liked best?
2: I then asked if I could cancel at any point?
He said they ask us to agree to NOT cancel since they pre pay for the magazines.

Well, after many runaround questions and answers it came down to me paying some odd $40 a month for one year and getting the next two years for free. If I was uncomfortable with the 36 month or 48 month commitment, when Atlanta called me I could ask for a shorter term, say 12 months. Again, I was never told yes, I could cancel my order at any time.

When I finally said, I was not willing to give my info over the phone, he said he could give me all the secure info I needed to help me feel secure about giving my credit card infor over the phone. I told him that was not the point. My concern was with agreeing to buy something based only on words and seeing no hard proof or writing of the terms of CMS's offer.

Again he tried to convince me to give my info over the phone as it was secure. I finally said, the bottom line was I was not going to give my credit card information over the phone until I was aloud to see some written proof of the offer so I could read all the fine print myself.

He said good day, and hung up.

Everyone out there, thank you very much for this information and site on the web. I thought to just check CMS out on the web on a fluke since CMS was so pushy. I am glad I was hesitant and did not give my credit card info over the phone.
