Ripping off the Dead!

My mother inlaw had already purchased a grave site at the cemetery and was to be buried ALONG SIDE her husband. When we called the cemetery we told them what day she was to be buried and they informed us there would be a $1600 Grave opening fee. When we said we would get them the money once her estate was settled, they said well if we don't get the money before Thursday, you won't be burying her here!!! That was just the beginning!

We got a cashiers check for the $1600 and met with the cemetery officials. They then tried to sell us on having her ashes placed on top of her husbands grave and saving the plot along side of his (which she already paid for) for us in which case we could have that spot when we passed. This could be done we were told for a small additional fee of $850! We thought about it and passed on the "deal" and told them to bury her in the original spot she paid for. I should point out that my wife's Mom wanted to be cremated so in reality they were just burying her ashes.

So we show up for the burial ceremony and I notice that there was not large mound of dirt. I also noticed that there was only a small square of sod placed at the head of the stone. Since the plot area was covered with the green carpet, we could not see where the hole was. Suspecting something was amiss, we came back the next day and to our horror/dismay, it looked as if all they did was take a spade, cut out some sod ON TOP OF HER HUSBANDS GRAVE, and place the small box containing the ashes in a shallow hole dug by a spade! We paid $1600 to open this grave!!! When our funeral director called the cemetery and complained the refunded $600 of the money! However I still believe this type of behavior is at best fraudulent and illegal! We paid that money to have the OTHER GRAVE OPENED and all they did was dig a hole that I could have dug in 10 minutes!
