US Collections Peter Marshall Family Readers Service Readers Service collection agency says I owe $18,000

Recently, I was called by the US. Collections agency for Family Readers Service. He said I owed $18,000. I have been paying a lot of magazine companies and I have the bank statement to prove it.
He says the payments did not come through. They were not for this company though, but I do not see how $18,000 could be for 1 company.
He said that the company sent a letter in 2008 that showed the debt.
I did not see that letter. He lowered the price to $499.99 and he asked for my credit card. I do not have a credit card. He said "they would call me".
He does not want a check.
I only get 2 magazines now and I do not know from what company. There were a lot of them including Readers Services and Global readers. Should I ask for more proof like an invoice? He does not want to give one.
Is he just scamming me? He knows my bank account number.
