Is the Post Office taking uninsured boxes and selling stuff on Ebay?

I have lost a couple of boxes recently that I have mailed out uninsured. I have noticed that the Post Office is selling new items, supposedly lost in the mail, on Ebay. Other friends that mail a lot have also noticed more missing packages in recent months. What's the scoop?
