Phone slamming and scam

Tonight, my 80 year old mom came home after a month in the hospital with repair work for 3 broken vertebra. Neither I nor several medical professionals could contact her by phone today, after my Uncle got her re-established in her home this afternoon. She also has a medical alarm that only works if the phone is working. Turns out that Cordia swiped her phone number from AT&T 3 months back, have billed her excessively since then and have now disconnected the phone. So now she is at home with 3 broken vertebra and a neighbor's cell phone - with no medical alarm system working. If she requires, but is unable to use her medical alarm, no monetary damages from these F! @#$%^ b! @#$%^& at Cordia would be sufficient. I talked to a rep at Verizon and she indicated it's common for Cordia staff to state they are representing Verizon/AT&T and with a push of a button you are now under them. I believe you can 'freeze' a phone number under your current preferred provider to reduce that chance of a-holes like Cordia from scamming the same people who brought us through World War II.in a word, criminal.
