Outlets not educated on U-Haul policy cost customer money

We rented a U-Haul trailer to move my girls into college. We asked several times and were told several times by the U-Haul representative at our rental location that the cost was $19.95 per day. We stated we would be dropping the trailer off in Birmingham the next day and she informed us that the location where we dropped the trailer off would refund us the difference in what we were being charged, $116.93 and the approximately $25.00 for a one day rental.

We should have known better than rent from this location when it took almost an hour for her to charge our credit card for the $161.93 which she explained was a deposit and two day rental, in the event we did not return the trailer within 24 hours. We have been working with our credit card company to resolve this issue. U-Haul is not offering to refund $60.00 instead of the $96.76 they should be refunding.

They now state that the U-Haul location we used is out of business and that per item 15 of the contract we were not due a refund as the contract states that no refund for unused days will be given. While the contract does state this the original request for a single day rental was presented by their dealer we now know did not know what they were talking about. Uneducated rep cost me $36.76 and lots of time.

Bottom line, don't trust your U-Haul rental location. Get everything in writing and have the U-Haul representative you are working with sign and date the information. If you can video tape it even better then U-Haul can't blame it on the customer.

Will think long and hard before renting from U-Haul again.
