Icon Security's seedy sales tactics

30 minutes ago I had what appeared to be a nice, clean-cut looking young man from Icon Security knocking on my door. He told me he was not a sales man and that his company was giving away free security systems and service to my neighbors just by allowing his company to put their security signs on their lawns. After I told him I was renting the house, he proceeded to tell me how the security system would increase the value of my home and lower my insurance payments (remember I just told him I was a RENTER (?). He asked for my full name and address, and when he asked for my phone number, I asked him why he needed it. He said Icon Securities would need to validate to see if I qualified for the 'free' security system. I asked if this meant the company would be conducting a credit check on me. He said no. I asked who they work with to validate if I qualify. He told me Experian or Transunion (hello!!!).

When I told him no thanks, I don't want his company hitting my credit report, he got upset and 'fine - I'll just give this away to someone else who wants it!' and walked off in huff. Curious, I googled Icon Security and found several complaints about them here on usacomplaints.com. The stories sound familiar with my salesman experience - definitely what I would call a 'trend'. Basically this company's representative lied to me about 1) not being a salesman, 2) giving me 'free' security equipment/service without a credit check, and 3) signing my neighbors up for the same service. I'm glad I didn't fall for their ploy and hope others seek and evaluate the company's online reviews BEFORE handing over their credit card numbers, social security numbers, or signing their names on the dotted line.
