Bait and Switch and Hard Sell: Moving Deposit

Shops, Products, Services

After being offered a rate based on weight estimate, and told by "Keadrick" that it would "lock in" the rate at which the load would be priced, the company called to do a re-estimate. The re-estimate—at a higher weight—no longer held that "locked in" rate of dollars per pound.

In addition, it was done as a hard sell, the broker's "quality control" person, "Carlos, " suggested that he was going to hang up the phone on me and we would very likely suffer higher prices at "full tariff rates" if I did not quit asking questions and wasting his time. He also refused to let me speak to management of higher rank than him, claiming that he was the highest ranking person present. He would not answer my questions about why the rate for the new estimated weight was a far higher price than the rate allegedly "locked in" a month ago. (I asked in the first go round how much 1000 lbs in addition to the first estimate would cost, and the price given to me was 500$ less than the re-estimated weight's price, which was 900 lbs more than the first estimate.) Nor would he tell me if the extra 900 lbs was paid at a different rate per pound than the first "locked in" rate per pound.in fact, he would not break down the costs at all, saying it couldn't be done, that he just entered numbers in a computer and only the final estimate appeared on his screen.

This was all in the service of shaking out another deposit, an additional 85% cost to the original deposit, while the change in weight estimates went up less than 16%.

No mention of an additional deposit occurred in any conversation I had with the first broker representative ("Keadrick"), including in a phone conversation where I asked him what the penalties would be if we revised the furniture list. Nor is an additional deposit at the point of re-estimation mentioned in any of the paperwork signed.

Finally, this all occurred exactly at the date where it would be impossible to cancel the services and receive a refund for the first deposit, according to the agreement signed. (4 business days before the scheduled move date)
