Smarmy

The best way to describe the three individuals I met at Competitive Advertising is "Smarmy". I entered through an outer door, devoid of any labels or signs. The girl behind the impossibly empty desk was busy doing her nails while answering phone calls - all of whom were perspective interviewees. When I was called in to the equally bare "Main Office", I was spoken to by some mid-late 20's man with an ill-fitting suit, a poor salesman's pitch, and a condesending manner. Seated to my left was an even younger guy, wearing some sort of early 1980's chic suit. At least it fit him.

My BS meter was going crazy in my head, as these two "kids" were not only unpolished, they had no idea HOW unpolished they were. I made sure the "interview" was as short as possible, because there was no way I was going to have anything to do with these shysters.

Are they a rip-off? My guess is they misrepresent who they are, at the very least. But that is just a guess... Not necessarily a statement of fact or an indictment of this company in any sense. My gut feeleing told me they were two young guys with a get-rich-quick scheme, where they manipulate others into making money for them.

To their credit, they could read my eyes and my manerisms, and they knew I was onto their BS before I even went in for the so-called "interview".

In any event, as I was leaving they said "We'll call you". I just laughed and said, "No you won't. You know there's no way in hell you're calling me back."
