Unauthorized Collect Call Charges on AT&T Phone Bill

I was checking my AT&T bill online, and it was a little more than usual. Because this line is STRICTLY for a fax machine and DSL service, the bill is pretty consistantly around $73, so red flags went up when I got a bill for $80.

I checked it out, and AT&T had billed on behalf of a company called OSC Communications, LLC for a 4 minute collect call from Tempe, AZ. The charges were $8.42.
It is physically impossible for anyone at my house to accept collect calls. We don't have a phone. There is a fax machine on the line and that's it. No handset.
So tell me, how is someone going to accept charges for an operator assisted collect call? Perhaps the fax machine was sick of it's mundane life and chose to accept the charges...

So through the postings on this website, I found out this is most likely a scam. I called the customer service phone number to OSP and spoke with a represenative named Angelica. She was pleasant and I explained my situation. I got the same answer everyone else has received, "We will refund your charges. It will take approxiamately 2-3 billing cycles for the refund to be issued."

By then the company will probably be long gone, and no one will have any recourse, and none of us will see a dime.

I STRONGLY encourage anyone who has received a charge from this company to contact your phone carrier NOW. Don't you think Verizon and AT&T have a responsibility to protect their customers from fraudulent charges from fly-by-night telecommunications companies? And don't you think they have the technology to do so? I plan on sending my carrier, AT&T an e-mail, a printed letter, and calling them.
