Will not take responsibility for clerk incompetence Ripoff

I took a package to the UPS counter at my local Staples store in Escondido, CA. I asked the clerk how much it would cost to ship the package. She said she had no way of looking up the price, because I had an account with UPS, and to just write my account number. Thinking the price would be something like $10 or $15, I left the package.

When I got the invoice in the mail, it was $30.67 for a 2-lb package to Hawaii. Not even overnight or express shipping. I called the UPS Billing Center and explained to them that if I had known it was $30.67, I never would have shipped the package using their service. They said it wasn't their fault, that I should call Staples. I told them that if Staples was handling their shipments, then UPS should take responsibility for it, especially since UPS was the one sending me the bill. I spoke to a supervisor for 20 minutes, and they refused to give me any kind of credit.

I next called the local Staples at 760-781-3930 and explained what UPS told me. They said they couldn't do anything because the bill came from UPS. They also reiterated that their clerk was unable to look up UPS rates if the package was being billed to a UPS account. They told me to call the Staples Shipping Center at 1-800-797-5924.

So I called them and spoke to two different people. They said there was nothing they could do, they were just able to do tracking of lost packages. They told me to call UPS again.

I am outraged that neither of these two HUGE corporations is willing to take responsibility for an incompetent clerk who was unable to look up the rate on the computer right in front of her.
