HP ink rewards - not as advertised

Staples advertised 20% reward with $50 HP printer ink purchase. I bought $50 and used a Staples reward certificate for partial payment. The clerk thought it was okay and wouldn't affect the 20% reward, checked with a manager who verified this. Not so - Staples Rewards treated it as a $30 purchase. I only buy ink when there's a sale/rebate/reward attached because it's so expensive. If the Staples employees didn't know I wouldn't get my reward then it seems obvious I couldn't have known. Got stuck this time, but not again. WalMart sells HP ink.
