Manpower
Promised job but did not deliver ripoff

Shops, Products, Services

It all started in April of this year. I left a somewhat low paying (but stable) job, that was thirty miles from my home, because I was offered a temporary position at a local factory (Multicolor). The job was two weeks long, starting on March 13 and ending on March 24. I spoke with the ladies at Manpower and told them that I was interested in a permanent position at Multicolor, and asked if my chances of getting a permanent job were good. I was assured that, if I stuck out my two weeks, they would make absolutely sure I got a job at Multicolor. Toward the end of the two weeks, I explained to Manpower that my parents wanted me to go on a family vacation to Tennessee the week after my two week assignment ended. It was understood that I would leave for Tennessee the next week, and call them the following Monday after that (April 3).

Before I left, I checked in with Manpower to see if they had any office type jobs open. I wanted an office job due to my typing and computer skills. I was told they did not have anything open, but they did have the perfect job for me. They said it would be a mixture of factory and office work. They told me to type up a resume to apply for a lab position at Multicolor. They said there was a very good chance I would get the job, and to simply drop my resume off at their office before leaving for my vacation. They also made it very clear that I should not tell anyone they were trying to get me the position. The reason they gave was that other Manpower employees might become jealous, thinking I was receiving special treatment.

I left for my vacation expecting to have a job when I returned home. Once I returned home, I placed a call to Manpower only to be told that the position had been filled. I was told at that point that, since the Multicolor job fell through, they would try to get me on as a Q.A. At a food canning plant, Morgan Foods. They promised me that, if I couldn't get on as a Q.A. Then they could definitely get me a job as a forklift operator. They told me they would have to forward my resume to the person in charge of hiring for the Q.A. Position, and they would contact me as soon as they heard something.

Over the course of about two weeks, I kept calling and asking about the status of the Morgan Foods job. I was told the same thing every time. I was told that they were still waiting on their contact at Morgan to call them to set up my interview. Finally, after waiting somewhere between two and three weeks, I was contacted to go in for an interview. I got up early and arrived at the factory with time to spare. I went to the guard shack and told the guard who I had an appointment with. The guard called my interviewer and was told to relay a message to me. That message? Something had come up, and I would need to call to schedule another interview.

By that point, I had had enough. I stopped bothering with Manpower and decided to go out looking for work on my own. After almost two months without any luck, I caved and decided to try them again. I walked in, told them who I was, and asked if there were any job openings. They pulled up my record and said, "the only job openings we have are at Multicolor, but we can't send you there since you have already worked for them".

I don't possibly see how they can say that after what they previously told me. Not only was I told to submit a resume AFTER my two weeks were up, but I was also told to call them the very next Monday after I returned, and they would work on getting me a job at Multicolor. If I am not allowed to work there again, after working there one time (and leaving in good standing), then why would they have had me submit that resume before leaving?

If the job was to be filled directly by Multicolor, and not by Manpower, then I would have had no need to call Manpower when I returned. I would have simply had to wait for Multicolor to contact me for an interview. Because Manpower told me to call them, it is obvious that the job would have been filled through them. That leads me to believe that they would have no problem at all getting me another job with Multicolor. I feel they are simply being difficult, and I would not recommend them to anyone at this point.
