Ripoff Not sure if I was ripped off I feel so STUPID

Help! I began receiving calls from Ken Hughes about 2 weeks ago. Paid no attention. I then received a letter stating that I owed $342.72 for an unpaid gas bill. I called MCG immediately as I have perfect credit and didn't want any black marks on it.

They had my SS# and a previous address where I had once resided in Chicago 10 years ago while I was attending college. I did not dispute this bill because I know that I probably did owe a utility bill or two from way back when. Stupidly - I paid it. Now I am wondering if this is now going to show up on my credit report as a paid collection with a 2006 paid date. I ran my credit report yesterday and there was nothing on it from MCG.

I called MCG back and spoke to a representative and was told that this would not go on my credit, but after reading all of the horror stories I am very concerned. I wish I would have done more research and found this website before I contacted them but I panicked and paid. Please, let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this.
