Publishers Business Services
Tricked me into a magazine subscription that I later found out was non - cancelable and a 5 year contract!

Shops, Products, Services

Sometime in the first week of December Publishers Business Services contacted me at my busy real estate office telling me that I would be awarded with 5 magazines if I participated in a short survey. The caller told me that I could choose my magazines from their list and all I would pay for is shipping and handling. I got tricked into their smooth talking spiel and reluctantly agreed to the magazines. All the while, I was attempting to hurry them off the phone.

About a week or so later, I received another call from a Publishers Business Services representative informing me that the call was being recorded and that they were confirming my address. At that point of the conversation I understood that the subscription was on a trial basis and that I could cancel at any time. A few days before Christmas I received a statement from Publishers Business Services that I had entered into a five (5) year contract that would total over $700.00.

I called Publishers Business Services to cancel the subscription and I was told that the subscription could not be cancelled. The representative told me that I either needed to pay the bill in full or I could make payments. I informed the representative that I would not be sending them any money and that I would refuse every magazine they send me. For the next several months I did receive and refuse all the magazines and statements sent to me. I was inundated with threatening phone calls from various Publishers Business Services at my work which interfered with my job. I asked them on numerous occasions to stop calling and harassing me at work. They didn't stop.in one of these harassing and threatening phone calls they tried to get me to settle for about $350.00, but again I refused to send them any money.

The last call I received was on May 22, and the caller totally lied and misrepresented himself. First he said his name was Clay and that he was calling from a 3rd party collection agency (he said some company name, but I didn't catch it) wanting to discuss cancelling my magazine subscription. I said "Great!" thinking that this is where I could dispute in writing for this bogus magazine subscription. He proceeded with the same Publishers Business Services comments and threats they made in previous calls to me, so I asked for his name and company name again. He then told me his name was "John" and I asked for his last name and he said "Smith". I realized at this point that this was another harassing call from Publishers Business Services and hung up the phone.

In the past few weeks I haven't received any magazines and I've mailed complaint letters to the Better Business Bureau in Nevada and Florida as well as putting my story here. I hope this story along with the other 178 complaints against Publishers Business Services will help someone else not to fall for this totally bogus scam.
