Publishers Business Services
Called a busy work phone, "verified" information, then billed me for unwanted magazines

Miscellaneous

I had received a call at the restaurant where I work as a chef. The woman had thanked me for my time and asked if she could verify some information. Having requested a subscription to an Trade magazine (NOT affiliated with this company), I thought that was what I was verifying.

I tried to be as agreeable as possible in order to free the phone as it was needed for lunch orders. At the end, the woman said she would be sending my order for 5 magazine subscriptions, I had wondered what she was talking about, but I had to get back to work.

I then received an invoice in the mail for subscriptions to Golf Digest, Car & Driver, Men's Journal, Home, and GQ. Along with a bill for $27 as a monthly payment to be made for 60 months! The other letter in the mail was from my bank informing me of a check by phone that had been attempted on an account that I hadn't used for months. I called the bank and the told me it was to Publishers Business Services, but did not have a check number. I ended up closing the account and the check was not paid.

I started getting Car & Driver and Men's Journal in the mail. I also started getting Home, a remodeling magazine sent to me at my apartment, which I cannot nor want to remodel. I have never gotten Golf Digest, which is just as well as I have never played golf in my life. GQ was sent to my work for some reason, and addressed me as Doctor!

I attempted to cancel any subscriptions and or services by phone and by mail, but to no avail. I was told it was a binding contract and that they had my approval recorded.

After 3 months of ignoring their bills, they started calling me with harassing calls, threatening me with a lawsuit for breach of contract in the amount of $754.35 for the entire contract.

I ended up paying Publisher's Business Services $97 to settle the account. I just wanted them to stop calling me. They repeatedly told me that my recorded approval was legal and binding and I should take responsibility for my bills.
