Ripoff Trying to collect money from me for voiding "contract" after I cancelled service

I had two (2) accounts with Cricket, 1 phone for me and another for my brother. I was already fed up with Cricket because of their TERRIBLE customer service. It's impossible to talk to someone so to get anything done you have to go into one of the stores. Once there, it takes at least an hour to get to talk to a rep. Anyway, after having a problem with a bill and being unable to actually talk to a CSR, I called to cancel the account for the phone I was using and left the other open for my little brother. The account was cancelled in Dec. Of 2005.in Feb. 2005 my brother's phone was cut off after he paid his bill. He and I tried calling Crooked... I mean... Cricket to find out why but of course neither one of us was able to talk to an actual person. My brother finally found a number to a corporate office here and was told that the phone to the previously cancelled account was purchased using a company discount and receiving that discount entered me into a "contract". They informed him that his service would not be restored until the full amount of the discounted phone has been paid.

First of all, I was NEVER informed of any type of contract upon using my company discount to purchase my phone nor when I called customer service to cancel the account. Secondly, no bill or letter was sent to my email or home notifying me that the service would be shut down if this amount is not paid. They just shut the service down out of the blue.

As most people who deal with Cricket know, you can't talk to anyone at Cricket if they say you owe them money. If your bill is in good standing with them, only then are you "allowed" to get through to a rep. They assume everyone has time to go into one of their stores and spend an hour or two. I don't have that kind of time. That contract business is a bunch of crap. I'll never use Cricket again and I'll tell any and everyone to avoid them at all cost. They have to have THE worst customer service of any organization around, I don't know how they survive.
