Ripoff Illegally turned off service

I want to report questionable business practices with my residential AT&T CallVantage Account. I received a call from someone representing AT&T on Sunday, February 26. I was told the account I have had for the last 18 months required an automatic payment and I needed to supply my checking account information over the phone. I questioned why I would want or need to do that and asked them to check if any of my payments had ever been delinquent. They confirmed that all my bills had been paid in full in a timely manner. I told them I would not provide confidential information about my bank account over the phone. After a very lengthy conversation about why I should give out this information I was ultimately told to look for a letter in the mail and follow the instructions to set this up over the phone. I did set up the automatic payment the very next day via their website. Yesterday, we discovered our phone service had been shut down. When we called AT&T we found out they had shut off our service "because they didn't think we were going to pay our bill because we seemed unhappy with them." To summarize I have had this account for 18 months and every month I have paid my bill. I have been a customer of AT&T for decades.in addition, I had also supplied my checking account information for an automatic payment two days before our service was cut. Because customers pay monthly phone service with AT&T in advance they basically shut off service we had already paid for. We did convince them to turn our service back on but this whole situation raises several red flags. I don't think a company has the right to shut off a service on a hunch that a customer is unhappy. I also think it should be illegal to shut off service that has already been paid for.
