Defrauded customer during checkout ripoff

I purchased a HP color Laserjet printer at my local Office Depot on Dec 17th. I also purchased one soda and one package of laser paper to print on. The cashier had a difficult time scanning the laser paper and called over another manager or cashier. This was someone who had a key to a drawer, so I am going to assume it was a head cashier or manager.

The store was very busy and the line long. I had been shopping all day and was very tired. I am a member of AARP, and am over the age of 50.

The manager then wispered to the cashier that she couldn't scan it because I didn't have a gift card and she would need to give me this to ring up the sale of the laser paper. I didn't pay much attention to this, but the cashier told me I was "Receiving" a $40.00 gift card. I assumed this was some sort of Promo for having purchased a high line product and didn't check the sales slip before I left the store. I received a rebate form for the product and Left the store thinking I had a FREE $40.00 gift certificate and my rebate form.

Later on, after the store closed I looked at my receipt. I was CHARGED for the $40.00 gift certificate which I never wanted or even asked for! This was intentional and deliberate on the part of the store manager and cashier. It was not a mistake. It was fraud plain and simple.

I paid the bill with my office depot credit card, but will take back the FREE gift card to the store and try to get credited for it, if not I will dispute it when I make payment. Then I will pay off the balance of my account and close it. There is no annual fee associated with this account, but I have had problems before with this store. They often leave rebate signs up even after it's past the rebate period to get people to purchase items. I don't know if it's all of the office depots that do this, but I never have had this problem at STAPLES where I also do business and have a store credit card.
