Two high school aged girls knocked at my door offering me overpriced magazine subscriptions so that they could go to Cancun. That should've been an immediate tip off right?
I felt uneasy with their plying me with compliments and trying to get all personal with me but I gave them $20 check and a $34 check for a subscription to go to a children's hospital. I thought it was strange how the one lead girl was so chatty, high-fived me and asked me for water, and I realize now, reading some other reports, that it must be some sort of script to add to get the victim's defense down.
After they left, I talked to my sister who was also scammed by the same company... Her subscription never came through. I became very angry and found this website and all of these reports, realizing I must've been scammed too. Then I called my bank to stop the check. I vented to the customer rep and he said the same thing had happened to his cousin while he ended up getting half a subscription.
I don't know if this is illegal, but it definitely sketchy and I feel so violated. I wish I had trusted my instincts. Any way of warning others out there BEFORE this happens?
