E-mail Discount and BOGO Code not honored in stores - 25% off and BOGO on shoes

Shops, Products, Services

Last week I received an e-mail of a 25% off on mens items, and a BOGO offer on shoes. The e-mail gave a character code that stated to provide upon checkout. I noticed the qualification in fine print that the 25% only applied to "select" items, which were not identified. It indicated this offer was valid in participating stores. So upon entering the store I asked a clerk whether they participated and what this applied to, and she consulted store managers in the front who approached me and told me they would honor all the men items and shoes upon checkout. But later at checkout the clerk could find no place to enter any code, and the guest services person who came to assist her could find no code field. The latter was very stern and said I had to have the "scan code" from the original e-mail, but no scan code was sent. So I returned most of the items I had taken 1/2 hour fitting on and finding.
