Ripoff Scam I wonder if they actually will bill us or if part of the scam is to see which suckers just pay their home phone bills without looking at it

We opened our Verizon phone bill to a very big suprise: our bill was over $200. It is usually only about $45 for 2 lines. Upon further inspection of the bill, I found charges from USBI for $155. They allege that we made 6 calls on Oct. 12, all within 2 hours to 2 UK numbers: 4412777701 and 441277770101.

First clue that this is a scam: different amount of digits in the 2 numbers. They can't possible both be legitimate telephone numbers. The last 4 calls were allegedly made within one minute of each other.

I called the number given for USBI and was told that they were merely a billing service for One Call. Then the agent offered to transfer me to One Call to deal with my issue. Second clue that this is a scam: how could he just "transfer" me unless USBI and One Call are part of the same organization?

When the "transfer" went through, a pre-recorded message told me that there was no one able to take any calls and it disconnected me. I then proceeded to call Verizon, whose toll call investigations unit said they would remove the charges from our bill. However, she warned me that USBI could still bill us independently.

I wonder if they actually will bill us or if part of the scam is to see which suckers just pay their home phone bills without looking at it and they don't bother going after those of us who actually review their bills before paying them.
