Total magazine ripoff!

The doorbell rang yesterday and there was a young man at the door. Normally I turn away door-to-door solicitors but the nice (seemingly) young man told me he was a college student at Stony Brook and needed to raise money for an Oceanography trip. He told me he lived in my neighborhood, and mentioned a street name, which in retrospect, isn't hard to do.

Seeing that I wasn't interested in yet another mag subscription, he mentioned that "many of my neighbors" opted to donate the mags to a Children's Hospital instead. Somehow, he convinced me to let him in (he was a friendly neighbor, after all) and then he told me that a 2-year sub to Nick Jr. Was $42.

I thought this was a lot, but now he was in my house, so I just gave him the money. The receipt he gave me looked fishy. I looked up the name of the company on the Internet and found these scam reports. Now I know there's no way those subscriptions are going anywhere near a children's hospital. I feel like a dope, but I'm just glad I wasn't assaulted or worse. How could I have been such an idiot? I will never trust charitable fundraising again, which is sad.

Supposedly I can cancel in 3 days, but the receipt states that you must notify the company AND the sales agent. The agent's name is barely legible on the receipt, and of course I do not have an address for the sales person (you can bet he's not my neighbor!) So I'm sending a letter to the company, but I'm not very hopeful. Hope I can others to avoid this type of scam.
