Internet scam charging $34 for "assistance" in SS card replacement

Politics & Government

I am a 67-year-old retired woman on social security who has had extensive back surgery and do not feel able many times to go to government offices and replace things (i.E., drivers license, etc.). I was interested in replacing SS cards for myself and my son (an adopted minor, 14), which were stolen with a wallet several years ago. I went online to find out if I knew the address of the SS office closest to me.

This company was there, front and center, offering "application assistance" for Social Security cards. I paid $34 each for two cards via credit card and then decided to go to the SS office myself to check to see if I had everything I needed. It was at the SS office that I was told that this was a scam, that SS cards costed nothing, and that they had been trying to get rid of these companies for a long time. It seems that they go away for a short time, and then pop up again.

It is clear to me that this company takes advantage of the confused and the home bound. I did receive a SS application in the mail (the same thing I filled out at the office) with a return envelope which I will return to them unused. To charge $34 for this, as if it were the fee for a SS card, is unconscionable. I don't know why it didn't seem to me at the time to be wrong.
