Found a car on Craigslist under private seller (no dealers) and when I went to meet the man that I spoke with about coming to see the car, we were meeting at his place of employment (a car lot). He assured me that the car was his own personal car that he bought at an auction, and just needed me to meet him at the lot because he was working. Me and the friend that took me up to look at the car looked at the car and I decided I wanted to get it. We talked him down $300 from $3200 to $2900, he said that was the total price of the car, so I paid him $2900 cash and he gave me a bill of sale with the total price of the car as $2900 with a line marked through all the tags/title/license fees. Here's where it got shady, but I had already given him the money... He said he did not have the title for MY CAR with him, he left it at home, and that I could take the car now and come back for the title the next morning. We agreed and I took the car and went home. The next morning I went up there to get my title and the man that sold me the car told me that he would need another $350 on top of what I already paid him so that he could get all his fees out and transfer the title over into my name. That's the way it is handled at a car lot, he says, but I wasn't supposed to be buying through a lot. I told him no, I would like my title now so that I can go transfer it myself, I didn't think this was fair because I have a bill of sale saying I owned the vehicle. He still refused to give me the title so I contacted a detective and was advised that if he has a dealers license, he could do pretty much as he wanted to screw me over unless I wanted to take him to court because it was civil and even though he is wrong, the police can not step in unless it becomes a criminal matter and he tried to come and take my car because I do own it. I was advised by a lot of different people that if I had a bill of sale saying that I owned the car, that I should own all the paperwork that went with it. It is a shame that people like this can come over to America and do as they please to take advantage of working class people that had no other option of getting a car than to go through someone like him, its a slap in the face to legitimate businesses and decent people to have this going on and no way to really get the help they need.
