On 7/10 I visited Jiffy Lube corporate Store #3132 in Chillicothe Ohio for my regular oil change and new windshield wiper blades on my 2005 Honda Civic. At that time I was told by the technician that I was due for a transmission fluid flush and filter change. I authorized them to do the additional work. According to the invoice the technician never changed my wiper blades and actually said they were Okay.
On August 11th I took my car to my mechanic, Lanny Rapp of Rapp automotive, because it wasn't performing as usual and was making a lot of noise. He asked if I had been maintaining my vehicle and I told him that I had kept up on regular oil changes and had just had the transmission fluid flushed and filter changed. I also told him that I had not ever experienced any mechanical problems with the car up to this point and that every time I have had it brought in for maintenance, I was told that everything was in great shape.
After performing a computer diagnostic test and other tests he determined that the wrong transmission fluid had been put into my car. His first course of action was to flush the transmission fluid to determine if my transmission was damaged. He told me at that time that the transmission fluid that he drained smelled like rotten cucumbers which indicated that my transmission had burnt up because the wrong fluid had been used and that I would have to replace my transmission. He explained to me at that time that Jiffy Lube used a Dex 3 transmission fluid with a T3 additive to make it compatible with import cars. He stated that it is most likely that they put in the wrong fluid but they could have also put in fluid that was contaminated. Either way he believes that Jiiffy Lube damaged the transmission in my car by their actions.
I consulted with two other independent auto mechanics to discuss the results of the computer analysis conducted by Rapp automotive. Both mechanics stated that based on the description of the problem and the computer analysis of the problem they would agree that the damage done to my car was most likely the result of the placement of incorrect transmission fluid in my car. One of these mechanics also related that this was not the first time that he had someone come into his store with a problem that resulted from the placement of incorrect fluids or not placing any fluids at all in a car by one of the quick lube places such as Quick Lube, Jiffy Lube and, TLC.in the course of making contact with these mechanics I was placed into contact with the former owner of a Jiffy Lube Franchise store who related that he had to deal with a situation in which an employee forgot to put oil into the car and burnt up a customer’s engine.
This information sent me looking for consumer reports on Jiffy Lube. I found a customer complaint against store # 251 that stated
“would like to warn EVERYONE not to take your car to JIFFY LUBE. I took mine for oil change and they placed an oil based fluid in my brake system which caused a complete brake failure resulting in over $2,000 damage. They gave me the run around for two weeks, left me without a car and put my life in danger as well as my 2 year old and everyone else on the road... Along with their complete lack of compassion and willingness to work with me in correcting the issue, They've given me the run around and decided NOT to take responsibility for what they've done!!! Buyer beware!!! I would like to warn EVERYONE not to take your car to JIFFY LUBE. I took mine for oil change and they placed an oil based fluid in my brake system which caused a complete brake failure resulting in over $2,000 damage. They gave me the run around for two weeks, left me without a car and put my life in danger as well as my 2 year old and everyone else on the road...
