Just wish I’d seen these reports about Ziinga before I entered the auction site and won a camera I didn’t really want. I paid the auction bid price and the postage/packing via the form that they e-mailed to me headed ‘credit card and ID verification’, at the time I did not realise the implication of my having to send a scanned copy of my passport. Then after the camera arrived I received my credit card bill where I’d been charged an additional £59.99.

On contacting the company I was informed that I had, by signing the ‘credit card and ID verification’ form, agreed to them charging me £59.99 for three months! They said it was a promotion that I’d agreed to, but as far as I was concerned there was no promotion and the ‘credit card and ID verification’ should have been titled ‘credit card and ID verification and membership agreement’.

I informed my credit card company to stop my credit card and to prevent any charges to the old card being rolled to the new card. Their retail disputes department said that as I had passed my credit card details to the company, I was in essence agreeing to the terms and conditions, but I needed to contact Trading Standards. This I did and was forwarded to Action Fraud www.actionfraud.org. Uk. They were very concerned and will be looking into the company which has already been subject to an Advertising Standards Authority judgement. They were even more concerned about the request for a copy of my passport which could be used for identity theft and as such they would pass on details of the case to the appropriate Police department and in the meantime I should speak to the Passport Office. This I did and the Passport Office has advised me to apply for a new passport and get my credit reference checked in case any loan applications are made.

I have now sort legal advice and have been told that if the company is foolish enough to make application through the British courts for debt recovery, the claim will be thrown out. Should I receive a fancy document from the company threatening all sorts of actions I should respond by stating that I will be very prepared to meet them but I will be accompanied by third parties from:

Trading Standards Department
CIFAS – The UK Fraud Prevention Service
Action Fraud – The National Fraud Authority
The Home Office’s Identity and Passport Executive
My solicitors
The UK Financial Fraud Action Department
My bank’s Consumer Retail Disputes Department
The UK Financial Services Authority

I will be contacting the BBC Watchdog as this company needs sorting out.

You must read the small print.

Remember, you don't get something for nothing!

Hindsight is great!
