Miscellaneous

I don't even know where to begin with this company. My husband and I have two large dogs and found it a challenge to find affordable rentals that would allow large pets. A friend told me that she heard that this complex would probably allow our pets. My husband and I scheduled a showing and explained our situation to the rental agent. We told her that we had large dogs and that they were considered a vicious breed. The agent suggested that we say our animals were of a mixed breed in order to get through the approval process. We lived there for almost three years, during which time we encountered all sorts of problems.

First of all, the dishwasher in our apartment was every bit of 15 years old. The racks were so old and rusty that most of the prongs were missing. I also discovered several of the drawers in the kitchen had been repaired with duct tape. The supposedly clean carpet was sticky feeling and left filth on the bottoms of our socks. Whenever it rained, water would leak into our basement. So I couldn't store anything down there that I didn't want ruined. This problem was reported no less than three times. I finally quit reporting the problem.

The apartments were obviously constructed with the cheapest of materials, especially the interior doors. I also reported the weather stripping on both doors. You could see daylight coming in all the way around the front door. The weather stripping on the front door became a moot point because the framing around the door had begun rotting and there was a hole approx. 2-3 inches in diameter right above the floor. That was real fun when it rained or snowed!

Once the temperature dropped both doors warped and would not close without lifting the door slightly. This repeated action weakened both door-knobs, which were obviously very old, and both broke within days of each other. When we called in a maintenance report, we were basically accused of being responsible for the damage even after I told them that I had made more than one maintenance request to have repairs done on the doors.

When maintenance finally did come, they fixed one door and said they had to come back to fix the other. When they did, one of my dogs accidently got out of the basement. My son immediately put the dog back in the basement. I must mention that this dog is more than just a little friendly. This happened on a Friday. The workers left and told the rental office that my son had intentionally let them out to upset the workers and that he was laughing and encouraging the dog. I think the repairmen just wanted to have an excuse to start their weekend early since it was a nice sunny Friday. The rental office told me that in order for my repairs to be completed, I would have to remove my dogs from the apartment entirely.

After a few rounds with the rental office regarding our remaining repairs, we came home to a notice on our door. The gist of the notice was that we had lied on our application about our dogs and that if we wanted to continue residing there, we must get rid of our animals.in addition, the rent had now climbed to almost $800. At this point we said no thanks and said that we were moving. We took great care cleaning the place after having been ripped off by our former landlord. We also took pictures of the unit before we left.

Imagine our surprise when instead of getting our deposit back we get a bill for almost $1,700 instead. As I looked over the list of charges my anger increased. Some of the charges were for problems that we had noted on our move-in walkthrough. Problems that they never addressed in our 2 years of residency. After my initial anger, I decided to fight back. We decided to take Triangle to small claims court to get our money back. Armed with our pictures and walkthrough report, we went to court and ended up settling out of court. We ended up paying them an additional $350.

I would have felt a lot better had they been made to give us our deposit back, but we felt the odds were probably not in our favor since they were well experienced in ripping people off in court. This can be verified through Franklin County Public Records. I used the county's website to look up my information. The records show a dramatic jump in lawsuits over the past several years. Coincidence? I think not! If you find yourself at the mercy of Triangle Real Estate, take my advice. Pay the $60 filing fee and sue them. They are in court so much that I'm sure it has occured to the judge that they probably aren't the most above board people in the world. As a side note, I had to go to court on something completely unrelated some months later and there they (Triangle Real Estate) were with a completely new set of victims!
