Miscellaneous

I received a phone call, from what sounded like an Indian call center, while I was on my computer (online). The man calling told me that he was from Microsoft Security Center and that I needed to renew my security warranty. He told me I would have to pay $109.99 for one year of full security. Not thinking about it, I allowed him remote access to my computer. He did things remotely on my computer in order to complete the download of the software. I had to enter my debit card information on SWREG's website for payment. After it was downloaded with my permission (not knowing it was a scam), I noticed that there was internet tracking software, known as Relevant Knowledge, on my computer as well. After a couple of attempts, I was finally able to uninstall this program. However, I believe there is still a fake/counterfeit version of Microsoft Security Essentials running on my computer. I recently did research on this situation and it turned out to be a scam. I found an article that explains the same scam in the UK.

Information can be found at this website: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/mar/01/microsoft-virus-scam-continues

I also found out that this supposed company has conned people out of their money. There were cases of them withdrawing extra money from people without their permission. I've been checking my bank account frequently and no extra funds have been withdrawn from this scam. However, based on my research, I believe they conned me out of $109.99. Also, I checked Microsoft, and they said that Microsoft will never call you at random about a security issue. I would like to track down these impostors and get my money back, but mainly, I would like to be able to stop them.
