This guy had an ad on Craigslist for a brand new IPHONE 4s. He was taking best offers. So I offered him 200 dollars and a 7 year old laptop that was just sitting in my basement. He agreed. I figured it was in my favor by a little. It didn't seem to unreasonable, thinking he might just need cash, and is a computer geek.
We met around his so called apartment building. Outside of course in case something fishy was going to happen I would have an "out" So he looked at the computer. Actually booted it up, and played around with it a little bit. Made "normal" comments. So I asked to see the phone. The phone was in a "sealed" iphone 4s box. Shrink wrapped like in the store. My first instinct. It's not been tampered with. It felt heavy enough to have a phone it in. We agreed on the deal. I was happy. He was happy. He walked away. I drove away. I presumed to open up the package to find out that there was a perfectly weighted zip lock bag of sand in the box. Oh, was I pissed. I emailed him to both email addresses thanking him for being a real man, and "earning" his money the way most trashy people do. Obviously, never got a response. But I've delt many times on craigslist, and this was the first time in 5-7 years that I've been scammed. My fault? I'll take 20% blame for not opening the package. But again. It was shrink wrapped. My wife said it must have took some time to make that box look perfectly new. Man. I'm not bummed about the laptop. It's old, out of date. But the $200 bucks out of my checkbook hurt last night.
