Suspicious Card Activation Call Asking for SSN Twice

I applied for a credit card online and received it in the mail today (9/8) with a $300 credit. I dialed 1-800-678-7820 to activate it. A machine answered and I was asked to verify my SSN and to press a number to speak to a rep. I then became suspicious because every credit card that I've activated I have never spoken to an actual person. A female with a Spanish accent answered and asked me to verify my last 4 digits of my SSN and my address and I did. She became chatty about the weather etc. And asked to verify my SSN again. By then I decided something wasn't quite right. I'm concerned that my SSN and address about giving out the information. I also called the customer service #1-800-955-7070. Again they asked for the last 4 digits of my SSN it sounded like the same person that I spoke to earlier while trying to activate the card. I told her that I decided not to activate the card and that I had changed my mind. She started to stutter and I ended the call by hanging up. Went on their website. Icons kept moving around and I could not get thru without putting in my SSN. Please advise. Thank you
