Store Credit Refund Short of Full Price on Unused Item

I purchased an item and wanted to exchange it for another similar item. I was told I could get a store credit refund only. The problem is I have the original purchase receipt showing the purchase price, which matches the current price of the very same item that they have in stock. And I was not given a full refund, for store credit.

The cashier knew I only came to exchange one part for another, and he knew that the company would still get to keep the money. Yet he insisted that he could not give a full refund, so I would have to take a loss on my refund for the brand new, never used item that I was returning, just to purchase the same item that bends to the left instead of to the right.
