Outright Discrimination

On March 19, I took my family (my wife, myself and my 3 & 5-year-old sons) to the Atlas Coffee Mill to use two gift certificates and enjoy the end of our vacation. We walked in, ordered, and then chose a table without a RESERVED sign on it since no one instructed us where to sit. We were then approached by a woman, who tersely told us that we needed to sit at a lower table and that they seated people. She then moved us to a table of her liking. She returned to us promptly when we asked our eldest to keep his voice down, got in his face, and said, “You must use your indoor voice and throw your outdoor voice in the garbage. If you use your outside voice, then you’ll have to be thrown outside.” She proceeded to hawk over us and curtail my children’s attempts to entertain themselves while we waited. Being hungry, my youngest was not happy about much and had a little fit. My wife calmed him down, and the harpy swooped in to snark, “Are you better now? ” When my eldest tried to play a tic-tac-toe game on the windowsill with his mother, the harridan told my wife, “This is reserved for another customer. Do you understand that this is reserved? ” As soon as they moved from the table, she was there wiping it down. No compassion, decency, or humanity. I was ordering a sandwich when this happened and immediately asked for it to go because we were all uncomfortable. This woman now walked over to other customers, said something to them, causing them to look over her shoulder at our table. I have never been the victim of scorn or contempt from someone whose business is to SERVE people. Was it that we had brought our progeny along? Why do they have a basket of children's books? Why isn’t there a sign notifying that children are NOT welcome? If it was the way we dressed, talked, or appeared, this is prejudice. A display family photo does not make you family friendly. It is clear we were not welcome; we will take our business elsewhere and tell ALL of our horrible experience.
