Taxes charges

Miscellaneous

I went to Verizon to upgrade my Blackberry which was on sale, after a $100.00 rebate, for $99.00 and on top of it I was eligible for a $50.00 discount. When I looked at the amount of sales taxes I was being charged, I realized they base the taxes on the list price of the phone (about $500.00) and was told that it is how they are supposed to tax the products. I can understand paying taxes on the price i would pay before the rebate and even the additional discount ($! 99.00), but I can't understand how Verizon is allowed (if it is true what they said) to charge the public taxes on the list price instead. I canceled the transaction and would appreciate your comments or intervention on what seems to me a highly unfair practice. Thank you in advance.
