Early cancellation fee of $70 demanded before renewal date

I paid for a year of Sirius radio and I was aware the plan would be automatically renewed if I didn't cancel. A couple of weeks before the renewal date, I tried to cancel, but was told if I cancelled early that I would have pay an early cancellation fee and that I could cancel only on the date of renewal. The early cancellation fee was approximately $70, which was almost half of what I paid. Especially if payment was made in advance, Sirius should accept cancellation requests when it is convenient for the customer. Altogether, I spent about an hour on what should have taken 5 minutes. Also when I cancelled, I wasn't given a confirmation number.
