Magazine solicitation fraud

Just got solicited for a magazine subscription. This one was good, she had me convinced enough to actually write the check. She was from the next block going to Syracuse University, trying to get a BBC scholarship. Today was her last day. Her dad made her earn it even though he had enough money to send her, she only had 8 left. You didn't need to take the subscription for yourself you could send it to a soldier in Iraq. She even carried a toothbrush so I could see that she was clean I guess??? When I came upstairs and googled the name of the company I ran back outside and as she was coming out of my neighbor's house I asked for the check back. She said her mom was in conferences all day but that she would call me. She said that since today was her last day it didn't matter if I bought because they were being mailed out right away. I said well since it's saturday night and there's no mail tomorrow either that I would be glad to give her mom the check back when I could see her license and verify that she was indeed a neighbor for the next block.
