Stop-payment check still charged $59 plus $30 cancellation fee

A few boys came to my door asking me to help provide money for their college funds by purchasing a magazine subscription. A few days after the two had left, my neighbor told me she was suspicious that this was a rip-off. I called my bank and put a stop payment on the check.

Today I found on my bank's website that a charge had been put through for an amount different from the original subscription price. I called the company named on the check, and they told me there was a $59 subscription charge plus an additional $30 cancellation charge for "cancelling" my check. I told them I had cancelled the check. She stated I was supposed to call the subscription company and cancel within three days.

I am sure there are more people out there who have had the same experience. Please let me know what I can do to let others know.
