Contract courier co. Like this one and others market to other companies that they should fire there current employees and contract with them. They give a low price and the companies think its a great deal.
Then they try to hire replacement drivers with there own cars and small trucks the pitch is they have a lot of work and you start at a price (in my case it was a few dollars more than I made gross) the say here is all the deduction you can take off of income then they charge you for the communication device that can only be used in there business no personal use. Then the uniform fee and you are required to check in before scheduled and you sign a waver so you have no workers comp insurance.
You have to get a higher coverage commercial auto insurance.
You have no vacation, medical insurance, no paid days off, no pay on holidays unless you work, no guarantee of any work at all.
All vehicle expenses are paid by the driver tolls gas repairs if you break down the send another courier and you do not get paid if you have to rent a truck and work you work for almost nothing. If the vehicle is stolen or damaged by others your out of luck.
Ad this all up I realized I would make less than $6.00 an hour for a 8 hr. Day I often worked 9 or 10. And that would only happen because i already had a 4cyl paid for truck no way if i had to buy a new one.
I have seen contract couriers using 10 yr old vehicles smoking exhaust damaged body and glass trying to break even then to buy health insurance???
The claim is your an independent businessman but they tell you how much what time and how you have to do the job because it is a job by any other name.
