Family Readers Club
MagazineCO magazine scam with no cancelation and plenty of empty threats

Miscellaneous

I received a call a few months ago claiming that I was eligible to receive 5 magazine subscriptions for two years at the one time price of $49.95 (one time). I was also told that I could change magazines at any time. They said they would send a list to choose from. This was even though the five they quoted me I told them I didn't want. They said no problem I could change later that this was just for their system. I thought it sounded like a great deal and the guy on the line was incredibly professional and nice.
I noticed a charge from a Readers Source on my account for 49.95 the next day and thought nothing of it. That's when everything went downhill. I continued getting charges for both 49.95 and 49.98 from the names: Readers Source, Magazine CO, Family Readers Club, and Family Readers Source. I felt that maybe I had misunderstood and it was supposed to be 49.95 per subscription so I let it go on for a while. They kept hitting me sometimes within two days of each other.
I had no way to contact them and the number in my statement was false. They finally called again claiming that I hadn't received all the magazines or my list because of a computer error and that I had to update my info. I expressed my discomfort at this and they put me on with a supervisor. I finally reluctantly agreed and they told me that I would then be recorded and no matter what to just give the answers they told me.

During the recording it said something about number of payments and my answer I was told was 25. When I disputed they stopped recording and explained it was just for the computer and that it had no meaning. After the call I figured I would at least stop being charged so much and would get a list to choose from. They hit me twice within two days from two different names.
I tried to call and cancel but was told it was too late. I told them I was in financial trouble and couldn't afford to have my bank account overdrafted when I try to pay my mortgage. I was told that they too were experiencing the recession and that they could lower payments but to get over it because everyone was in the same boat. I realized there was no dealing with them and was tired of being told I was lying. I hung up after they threatened to get a collections agent on my account.

I then filed a police report, cancelled my debit card and notified the bank (who refunded half of what I had paid). The BBB said that it was being handled federally after being redirected to many other cities when she searched it. They made a note of it but said that not only is it federal but because it traces back to canada that it was also an international issue.
Thankfully my bank is aware of the issue and all reports are filed so they can't bleed me anymore. They never had my checking info just my debit card so they shouldn't be able to make any further charges since this is cancelled. I am working with a sergeant in my county to take further action but he said they move so quick it's hard to catch them. Hopefully there will be justice for these people at some point! Complete scam and to date I've only recieved two magazines so I essentially paid $150 a piece for them!
