Telemarketer misrepresented himself then withdrew money from my bank account overdrawing my account

Miscellaneous

I was contacted by a telemarketer who lead me to believe that he represented the Magazine company that we already deal with.

His statement was " We are the company that sends you your magazines", and they had heard that we had been recieving several phone calls from people saying that they were the magazine company where we get our magazines. He was going to help stop the bogus calls.

He stated that we needed to tell them how our bill was being paid. I told him originaly that we paid by debit transactions. However due to the withdrawls being taken at various times of the month, it created a nightmare with the bank account.

He agreed and was sympathetic. I told him that is why they were receiving a check each month instead of automatic withdrawal.

I further told him that that is how they would be paid till the contract expired. He told me that was no longer acceptable they would no longer accept checks. He further explained that too many people were paying late or not at all.

He said any checks would be returned. So wishing to end the 5 years I gave him the debit info and he informed me that they next transaction would be the 15th of November. I told him that no money would be available until that time. He assured me that he understood and had no wish to cause us any problems.

He said they would be sending me a list of the magazines we recieve and which ones we wanted to stop getting.

The next morning I went check the bank balance only to find out that some one calling themself Magazine Source had withdrawn $49.95 which overdrew my account causing a bank charge of $29.00.

I went to the bank and closed the debit card. The bank and I tried several times to call the number given on the debit withdrawal. What we got was "Your number cannot completed as dialed". I looked up my caller ID and tried 7 different times over the next two days to call that number only to receive a rapid buzy signal.

The telemarketer called on the 1st of Nov. On Nov. 8th I got a notice from Readers Source telling me I had agreed to buy 5 subscriptions for a total of $1199.52 and for my convience my credit card would be charged $49.98 per mo for 5 years.

The form letter is also not signed, mearly READERS SOURCE.
It's ironic, but his last statement before hanging was " Don't accept any phone calls about magazines, we will not contact you by phone again.

I called the company that we get our magazines from and she told that they had recieved several complaints about this same problem. She assured me that they still accepted checks and continue to pay by check each month.

By giving out Bogus phone numbers it looks like Readers Source deliberately keeps an individual from calling and cancelling.
