Door to door salesman selling magazines. Paid 1/2 and mailed a check for the other half. Now finding out it was a scam

A young man came to the door selling magazines. We paid 1/2 up front and then mailed a check for the balance. The check was cashed and we have not gotten our magazine. We searched the company we wrote the check to and all the information we can find is that it is a scam. So now we are out $50.00
