Hinge Part Not Sold Separately, Entire Back Panel Required

The hinge for my laptop recently broke because of poor design. The problem should be easy to fix since it is obvious I just need a replacement for a small, inexpensive-looking metal part (about 1 square centimeter). When I called Dell's spare parts department, I was told that they had the part, but they would not sell it separately. Instead, they wanted me to buy a replacement for the entire back panel on the laptop for about $45. I think that Dell is just being greedy. Car companies don't make you buy a new engine if your spark plugs go bad, why should I have to buy an entire back panel just because one little piece of metal broke?
