Miscellaneous

A couple months ago i was contacted at work by this company. They told me as a manager, i was specially selected to receive a couple magazines for 6 months at no charge. I was skeptical, so the only information i gave them was my address.

Some time later, i was contacted again, and they asked me what magazines i would like to receive, i picked a few. Then they mentioned something about payments and that they ask that you do not terminate this subscription. I said that i wanted a trial time first, to make sure i liked the magazines. They didn't tell me i couldn't do that. So i was left with the impression i could.

Some time later, i recieved a couple magazines and then a bill. Without thinking, i went ahead an payed the bill. Awhile later, i decided i was not satisfied with the customer service, and i didn't like the magazine. The only information i had about them was an address, so i wrote them a letter terminating my subscription. (which i still have a copy of)

Sometime later, a woman named gloria called me about an overdue balance. I explained to them that i sent a termination letter, and she said i needed to talk to Lisa in customer service.

So, i called Lisa. She told me quite rudely that i could not terminate the subscription, as they were preorded and prepaid. And that she had me on tape agreeing to this. I told her i had no copy of such an agreement, and i requested one. I was told that was not possible, but i could listen to myself agreeing to this on tape. So i listened, and it was an excerpt of one of the three conversations i had. It was incomplete, and even so, it still did not prove that i agreed to this irreversable contract, which i didn't. I asked for a copy of the tape, again she refused. I told her that i was not paying anything until i had evidence that i agreed to this. I told her since they were in sole possesion of the tape, they could have edited the tape and had me agreeing to anything i wanted.

She got extremely angry and rude, and told me that this would go on my credit report and blah blah blah. Oh, and sometime during this conversation she said she could settle for her cost which was about 500 dollars.
I told her to quit calling me, and if she even thought about touching my credit report, my lawyer would be in touch. This was a couple weeks ago.

I've received a couple threatening phone calls and letters, but since they don't have my home number, they just call me at work. I'm not to worried about it, other than i hope it doesn't go on my credit report. I don't think they can, as they have no information except a couple of checks with my name and address on. No credit card numbers or ss number.
I can't believe these people are getting away with this.
