Crashed into my car, stole personal property, refused to compensate!

Alright well here goes: Basically, I agreed to live with this individual for the 2008 school year at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I had gotten an off-campus apartment and needed a roomate FAST in order to make the security deposit on the place that I had found or else I wouldn't have a place to live for the year. I had called on him because he'd been my friend the year previous and I figured that we would get along okay, plus I knew he was well-to-do and had the money up front. As a result, I knew that I had to deal with whatever he was like for the year, but I thought "it can't possibly be that bad... He's an RIT student so he's got to have a good head on his shoulders, right?"- WRONG!!!

First of all, I would like to say that as an individual, he is a bad person. He is disgusting (leaves dishes in the sink for 2-3 weeks and then claims they're not his when you ask him to do them), bossy, arrogant, destructive, and violent. I could live with the messiness because honestly, it's manageable. However, the property damage caused by this individual is unbelieveable! One morning he woke me up by banging obnoxiously on the door screaming about how he had "clipped" my car as he was backing out of the driveway. I thought I was imagining things so I went back to sleep, however, when I got up I found that the front of my car had been smashed in. The grill was entirely missing and there were dents in the radiator as well as cracking in the frame of the car. I thought to myself "that's not just a 'clip' that's a full on collision."

Mike had declared that he would pay for said damages, but all I needed to do was to get an estimate, so I took my car to a shop and had them estimate what it would cost to repair. The estimate was $1045.27, and once Mike saw it he freaked out and said that he would not be paying it, so I threatened to call the cops and have them retrieve the insurance information for me (which he refused to give) so that I could have the insurance take care of said damages. At that point, his eyes got really wide and then he shouted at me that he wanted my car appraised because he didn't feel my car was worth that and wrote me a check for $1045 but told me that if I cashed it he would have me arrested for insurance fraud.By the time I went and tried to cash the check I was informed that not only were there insufficient funds in his account but also that he had put a stop payment on the check.

At this point, he's moved out of the house and has also stolen a mini fridge, fan, refused to pay utilities, and has still not reimbursed me for the damages done to my vehicle. I fear I'm going to have to take him to small claims court, but I'm not sure if I have enough of a case because this happened on 2/22/08 and here we are in July. I mean I thought that because he was my roomate he wouldn't want to deal with me harrassing him about it just about every day he was here and that he would take care of it.

I just want to warn everyone out there to BEWARE!!! He is not a good person and is trying to rip you off at every turn!!!
