Who are these thieves? How are they able to create phony collections on people?

I was first contacted by these people in January of this year. They called me and told me I owed a loan for roughly 4000.00 that had been paid in full since 12/05. I told them so the first couple times they called. They were very rude and insisted that I make arrangements to pay this debt. I stopped answering when they called. Then they began sending me letters through the mail, all of which I ignored, hoping they would get their facts straight and leave me alone. They did not.
I was served a court summons on May 20th this year. I did some investigating and spoke with both the companies they claim to be collecting this debt for, they have no knowledge or records of any debt owed to either of them.
Then I managed to track down the financial institution that the original loan was through. Their records mirrored mine. The debt was paid and the account closed in 2005. The representative I spoke with stated she would contact them and set the record straight.in the meantime, I have entered a counter complaint against their so-called, lawsuit in the event they intend to follow through with their threats.
I was truly amazed that such a thing could happen and tried to figure out how. The only thing that makes sense is this: I went online to obtain my credit report in Nov. Of last year. There appeared this loan that I knew was paid. I sent in a statement contesting the entry.
I had heard nothing from anyone regarding this loan since closing the account in so I assumed it was a simple mistake. It was shortly after doing so, that I first heard from RAB. So I wonder if they somehow check out people's credit reports and if there is any activity by the individual, they just see if they can pretend to be collecting any such debts that are being contested. Apparently, they think people are stupid enough to just hand over money they have already paid.
